Executive Director – Digital Media Trust

NZ On Screen and AudioCulture | Digital Media Trust

  • Preserve and celebrate NZ’s screen and music heritage
  • Hands-on leadership role with a small, dedicated team
  • An opportunity for influence and innovation in our creative sector

Mō mātou | About Us

The Digital Media Trust (DMT) is the charitable trust behind two unique cultural platforms: NZ On Screen and AudioCulture. Through these web platforms we preserve and celebrate Aotearoa’s screen and music heritage, making it accessible to New Zealanders and the world.

Our vision, Aotearoa is richer through a greater understanding of ourselves, drives everything we do. We are primarily funded by NZ On Air and operate with a small team of staff and contractors based in Auckland and Wellington. We are united by a deep commitment to the work and the sector we serve.

This is an exciting moment for DMT. We are about to launch a new NZ On Screen website that will include transactional video on demand (NZOS+) and a significantly enhanced user experience to audiences across Aotearoa. The incoming Executive Director will step into this momentum and have the opportunity to shape the organisation’s next chapter.

Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role

As Executive Director, you will provide the strategic leadership, sector credibility, and operational drive that DMT needs to thrive. You are the link between the board and the team, keeping the organisation well-governed, financially sustainable, and focused on its purpose.

This is a hands-on role that requires a genuine all-rounder. You will be as comfortable building funder relationships and making the case for DMT as you are discussing website development. You know how to hustle for resources, how to hold people with care, and how to think strategically about what comes next.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Strategic Leadership: develop and implement DMT’s strategy in partnership with the board, positioning the organisation to grow its audiences, deepen its impact, and remain financially sustainable.
  • People Leadership: lead a small, values-driven team across two platforms and two cities with warmth, consistency and genuine pastoral care.
  • Finance and Funding: take ownership of financial performance and sustainability, including funding applications, budget management and the active pursuit of new and diversified revenue streams.
  • Platform Stewardship: oversee the ongoing development of NZ On Screen (including NZOS+) and AudioCulture, ensuring high-quality, user-friendly and innovative digital experiences.
  • Stakeholder Relationships: build and maintain trusted relationships with NZ On Air, the NZ Film Commission, Te Māngai Pāho, Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision, the Ministry for Culture and Heritage, and the wider screen and music sectors.

Ko wai koe | About you

We are looking for an experienced leader with a genuine passion for the New Zealand screen or music sectors. Ideally you will have strong connections in these sectors, or the ability to proactively develop them. You will also bring:

  • The ability to hustle effectively for funding and build compelling relationships with public funders, partners and stakeholders.
  • Financial literacy sufficient to manage tight budgets and identify new revenue opportunities.
  • Exceptional people leadership skills. You are a warm, consistent presence who knows how to support and develop a small team that cares deeply about its work.
  • A hands-on, can-do approach. You are not afraid to roll up your sleeves and get things done.
  • Experience reporting to or working alongside a board would be an advantage.

Wellington is the preferred location however exceptional candidates from other locations will be considered; noting there is limited budget for travel.
