Manaaki Whenua – Landcare Research (MWLR) is the Crown Research Institute that specialises in research on Aotearoa New Zealand (AoNZ)’s land environment and biodiversity.  Our research helps AoNZ to make informed decisions on how we use our land, soils and water; supports the protection and restoration of native biodiversity; underpins national biosecurity responses; enables positive action on climate change; and explores the relationship between people and our environment.

Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About these roles

These newly created positions will each lead a Science Group, and will:

  • cement ‘performance of the research’ as the primary focus of our senior leadership team.
  • identify and deliver on revenue opportunities from new and existing clients.
  • own research direction for their portfolio and lead the development of the science capability.
  • set the direction for the research delivery of the group ensuring projects strategically align, are well planned and managed, and deliver meaningful impact for the environment.
  • lead across a team of approximately 50 staff and a revenue target of $20-25 million.

The 4 Science Groups have been defined as follows:

  • Group 1: Restoring ecosystems
  • Group 2: Managing invasive species
  • Group 3: Catalysing change for improved terrestrial systems
  • Group 4: Land resources and climate change (old: Enhancing soils, water and land use)

These positions can be based in Auckland, Palmerston North, Lincoln or Hamilton.

We are seeking to appoint a team of leaders who are exceptional in their own right, and also committed to working as an even more exceptional collective.  We will be looking for:

  • Evidence of entrepreneurial spirit and a commitment to innovation
  • Exemplary scientific credibility in at least part of the Group you will lead, supported by a doctorate level qualification.
  • The ability to work effectively with clients across the public and private sector.
  • A strong focus on revenue growth and tangible results, whilst also ensuring staff are engaged and high performing
  • A deep commitment to the values, purpose and future of Manaaki Whenua.
