We are tangata whenua in Tāmaki Makaurau, a hapū of Ngāti Whātua whose whakapapa traces to Tuperiri and the hapū Ngā Oho, Te Taoū, and Te Uringutu.  Our authority over land and sea rests on take tupuna, take raupatu, ahi kā, and tuku whenua.  With over 8,000 registered members across Aotearoa and overseas, we’re guided by our mātāpono of Tino Rangatiratanga, Manaakitanga, Whanaungatanga, and Kotahitanga as we work toward our 2050 Strategy.

We have embarked on a significant reset to ensure we are fit for the future, creating a more unified, agile and whānau focused organisation.  As a result, we are recruiting a number of new senior positions including this one.

The Role | Te Tūranga

As Toi Whātua, you’ll lead the strategic direction and execution of our iwi-wide cultural strategy spanning te reo, waka, toi, mātauranga, and marae development.  You’ll ensure reo, tikanga, kawa, and cultural protocols are normalised across the organisation while providing trusted advice to the CEO, Board, and senior leaders.

What You’ll Lead | Ō Koutou Mahi

  • Cultural Strategy: Embed Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei identity across organisational policies and systems, providing strategic advice to CEO and Board.
  • Te Reo Revitalisation: Drive group-wide reo strategy, normalising te reo use while safeguarding Ngāti Whātua reo, mita, and expressions.
  • Mātauranga Stewardship: Lead iwi knowledge preservation and dissemination, establishing tikanga standards and overseeing digital archives.
  • Taonga & Whakapapa: Provide strategic governance of whakapapa systems, taonga protection, and archive infrastructure.
  • Cultural Diplomacy: Strengthen representation across inter-iwi, national, and Indigenous platforms while influencing policy for Indigenous cultural recognition.
  • Rautaki Ahurea: He whakaū i te tuakiritanga Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei puta noa i ōna wehenga katoa, me te āwhina i te Kaiurungi me te Poari.
  • Te Whakarauora Reo: Kōkiri i te rautaki reo puta noa, kia māori noa te kōrerotia o te reo me te manaaki i te reo ake o Ngāti Whātua, te mita me ōna rerenga.
  • Pūpuru Mātauranga: Ārahi i te purutanga me te tohatanga o ngā mātauranga o te iwi, te whakatau i ngā tikanga pupuru, me te manaaki i te taha tiaki mātauranga ā-hiko.
  • Taonga & Whakapapa: Te tuku ārahitanga ki ngā pūnaha whakapapa, tiaki taonga, me ngā huarahi pupuru mātauranga ā-hiko.
  • Reo mō te Ahurea: Whakakaha i ngā hononga i waenga i tō tātou iwi, ā-motu hoki, tae atu hoki ki ngā āhuatanga whakatairanga i te taha iwi taketake, i te taha ki te ture, i te taha hoki ki te whakamanahia ōna.

What You’ll Bring | Ō Koutou Taonga

  • Leadership Excellence: Proven experience leading high-performing teams with strong performance management capability.
  • Cultural Expertise: High-level competence in te reo Māori with deep knowledge of tikanga and cultural development frameworks.
  • Strategic Capability: Experience in complex multi-stakeholder environments with passion for raising whānau aspirations.
  • Communication Skills: Articulate communicator in te reo Māori and English, confident with media and public speaking.
  • Ārahitanga Kounga: He mātau ki te ārahi rōpū, he mātau ki te whakahaere tāngata.
  • Tohungatanga ā-Ahurea: He mātau ki te reo Māori, he mātau ki ngā tikanga, he mātau ki ngā huarahi whakarauora.
  • Mōhiotanga ā-Rautaki: Kua mahi ki ngā wāhi he nui ngā whiringa kōkiritanga, ā, e tapatahi ana ki te hiki i ngā wawata o te whānau.
  • Whiri Kōrero, Whiri Tangata: He mātau ki te kōrero i te reo Māori me te reo Pākehā, tae atu hoki ki te kōrero ki te ao pāpāho me te hapori.
