  • Establishment role for new Industry Skills Board (ISB)
  • Help build the skills that build Aotearoa
  • Make your mark on the future of vocational education

Mō mātou | About Us

The Tertiary Education Commission is establishing eight new Industry Skills Boards (ISBs) to ensure vocational training is relevant, high-quality, and driven by those who know it best: industry.  The Manufacturing and Engineering Industry Skills Board will play a critical role in shaping the future of one of New Zealand’s most essential and innovative sectors — from food and beverage production to mechanical engineering, textiles, rail operations, and advanced manufacturing.

Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role

We’re seeking a Chief Executive who can lead with clarity, credibility, and a deep commitment to industry-led solutions.  This is your chance to drive a transformation in vocational education that delivers the right skills, at the right time, for a sector that powers our economy.

You will shape the organisation, working closely with the board and key partners.

This is a rare opportunity to:

  • lead the development of training standards that reflect real-world industry needs.
  • build deep partnerships with our employers, educators, and government.
  • support the transition from Te Pūkenga’s work-based training functions to a future-focused, industry-led ISB model.
  • embed equity, bicultural partnership, and workforce sustainability into every decision.
  • ensure the ISB is highly responsive to emerging workforce needs and sector priorities.

Ko wai koe | About you

This role demands agility, influence, and a relentless focus on delivering for industry.  Your experience will include:

  • proven leadership experience with particular skills in change, engagement and delivery.

  • exceptional relationship building and engagement skills.
  • strategic systems thinking and a commitment to inclusive outcomes.
  • the ability to inspire trust and drive change across diverse communities.
  • a willingness to be hands on and work flexibly with a small, dedicated team.

This position could be based in any of our major cities.  It would be ideal if you could commence the position in December 2025, however this can be negotiable for the right candidate.
