The Tertiary Education Commission is establishing eight new Industry Skills Boards (ISBs) to ensure vocational training is relevant, high-quality, and driven by those who know it best: industry.  We’re seeking a visionary Chief Executive to lead the Services Industry Skills Board.

This ISB will represent one of the most diverse and fast-evolving sectors in Aotearoa, spanning everything from hospitality and retail to tourism and business services.

We’re looking for a Chief Executive who can bring clarity, agility and bold leadership to this exciting challenge.  You will shape the organisation, working closely with the board and key partners.

This is a rare opportunity to:

  • drive the design of training standards that reflect industry priorities and emerging trends.
  • build deep partnerships with employers, educators, and government.
  • embed equity, bicultural partnership, and workforce sustainability into every decision.
  • ensure the ISB is highly responsive to emerging workforce needs and sector priorities.

This role demands agility, influence, and a relentless focus on delivering for industry.  Your experience will include:

  • proven leadership experience with particular skills in change, engagement and delivery.
  • a deep understanding of and credibility in the services sector.
  • familiarity with the vocational education system and its levers for change.
  • exceptional relationship building and engagement skills.
  • strategic systems thinking and a commitment to inclusive outcomes.
  • the ability to inspire trust and drive change across diverse communities.
  • a willingness to be hands on and work flexibly with a small, dedicated team.

There is a preference for this role to be based in Wellington. It would be ideal if you could commence the position in December 2025, however this can be negotiable for the right candidate.
