General Manager Operations (12 month fixed term contract)

  • Lead nationwide operations through major organisational transformation
  • 12-month fixed term, reporting to CE, 200 staff, 12 direct reports
  • Auckland-based preferred but other locations considered

We are working with a public sector organisation that has significant operations across the country.  Due to significant change, they are seeking a General Manager for a 12 month fixed term contract to lead their operations across New Zealand.  This is not a maintenance role, you will be leading through transformation, creating a high performance, customer focused culture that delivers.

The role

Reporting to the Chief Executive and sitting on the senior leadership team, you will have overall responsibility across all regions.  You will lead a group of around 200 people, through 12 direct reports.

Your priorities will include:

  • Providing clear direction to regional teams during a significant operating model change.
  • Building trust and collaboration between disparate teams.
  • Developing and implementing regional operational plans, strategies and budgets aligned to organisational goals.
  • Lifting performance across the group, including addressing underperformance where needed.
  • Maintaining strong relationships with the communities and stakeholders the organisation serves.

About you

You are a confident, experienced people leader who can bring teams through change, not just manage steady-state operations. You will have:

  • Senior leadership experience in a complex, multi-site operating environment.
  • A track record of leading organisational or operating model change, ideally in a regulated, service-delivery setting.
  • Strong relationship-building skills across diverse stakeholder groups.
  • The judgement to navigate ambiguity and ministerial or governance-level accountability.
  • Experience in the private, commercial sector is preferred.

Location

This role is ideally based in Auckland, reflecting the location of the largest regional team. Candidates based in other major centres, such as Christchurch, will be considered, with regular travel required.
