For more than two decades, Housing Foundation (HF) has helped whānau move from renting into home ownership. Its shared ownership and rent to own pathways make home ownership a genuinely achievable goal for families who would otherwise be locked out of it.

HF’s model combines commercial discipline with a deeply mission led purpose. As a Community Housing Provider, HF has built lasting partnerships with iwi, other community housing providers and government to extend home ownership opportunities across the country.

The sector’s funding environment is changing. Structured debt is now a significant part of how organisations like HF fund their development pipeline. HF’s board is entering a period of renewal to build the skills and experience needed for this next stage.

Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role

HF is seeking up to three trustees to join its board. One appointment will bring deep experience in debt funding, treasury or institutional lending, strengthening the board’s oversight of covenant and lending relationships and its ability to engage credibly with lenders. Another should bring broad property expertise, ideally including residential. A further appointee will bring lived experience of housing affordability or of navigating community support systems, and a genuine interest in building a governance career, even without a formal governance track record.

This is a paid governance role with monthly meetings. Applications are welcomed from candidates based anywhere in Aotearoa. As a trustee, you will:

• Contribute to strategic direction and monitor organisational and financial performance
• Provide governance oversight of risk, including, for one appointment, debt, covenant and lending relationships
• Support HF’s partnerships with iwi, government and other housing providers
• Attend board and committee meetings, with occasional wider stakeholder engagement
• Be a constructive, collaborative and values centred board colleague

Ko wai koe | About you

We are seeking applications from candidates with credible governance experience and financial literacy (noting those with lived experience may be early on this journey), and with a genuine commitment to our kaupapa and values.

• For one appointment: deep experience in debt funding, treasury, institutional lending or banking, ideally including covenant or credit relationship management, and the ability to communicate these concepts effectively.
• The other appointments will bring lived experience of housing insecurity and property expertise respectively.
• a values-centric, outcomes (not outputs) approach, focused on long-term, sustainable housing outcomes for others
• a holistic, strategic thinker with sound judgement, integrity, and the ability to work well as part of a collective board
• An understanding of, or willingness to build, knowledge of obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi
• Based anywhere in Aotearoa, with willingness to travel to Auckland for board meetings
